Comprehensive list of bag Sewing Patterns from Vogue, McCalls, Butterick and Simplicity

I know how time-consuming it is to try and find a sewing pattern for something in particular, such as a handbag or 50’s style dress, etc. That is why this week I have written this blog post to highlight all the sewing patterns that we stock at Sewing-Online.com for sewing your own handbags, clutch bags, luggage bags, etc. I have been through the site with a fine-tooth comb to bring you this comprehensive list of all those handbag sewing patterns from the likes of Vogue, McCalls, Simplicity and Butterick.  I have categorised them by brand and written a small description of each pattern for you.  I have also added some important links to other handbag making essentials that we sell such as bag handles, embellishments and fasteners.  There are over 85 sewing patterns for bags in this list so you might want to bookmark this page and come back and take a look when you have a bit of time to browse the list.    I hope this blog post will be one that you refer to time and time again when you fancy treating yourself by sewing a new handbag. I will also write more posts like this in the future for things like …’sewing patterns for  dresses’, ‘sewing patterns for trousers’, etc.

I sent out a tweet from our @sewing_online Twitter account saying that today’s blog post was all about sewing patterns and the lovely @originalstitch kindly sent me links to a tutorial for their OriginalStitch upcycled bag. The bag is described as being their famous Fortune-Teller bag and it is made from a vintage square scarf and a vintage long rectangle scarf. The only other things you’ll be needing are all your usual sewing essentials such as sewing machine and thread which are available to buy in our online sewing shop.

If you would prefer to buy a sewing pattern book full of bag patterns instead of a single pattern envelope then we sell Purses, Bags and More written by Pearl Louise Krush, Twenty Floral Bags To Make by Susan Cariello and Carry Me by Yuka Koshizen.

Once you have sorted out which sewing pattern you will be buying you might also need to buy some other handbag making essentials such as Bag Handles, Magnetic Bag Clips, D Rings, Iron-On Velcro or Sew-On Velcro and Zips.

We have fair postage and packaging prices so you won’t be penalised for only buying one pattern or just placing a small order. We only charge £1.99 delivery on UK orders of under £10, £4.99 on UK orders of over £10 but below £50 and if you spend over £50 you can have UK delivery free of charge. We can also deliver outside of the UK and the charges can be found here.

I have made lots of handbags before and they are not always as difficult as they look. Some patterns might be a bit more difficult than others but if you are looking for a really simple pattern to start your foray into bag sewing then a good starting place might be one of the patterns from the ‘It’s So Easy’ range by Simplicity or the ‘See and Sew’ range by Butterick. I cannot remember which pattern I used when I made all my bags but it was a basic tote bag with magnetic closure. I chose to always line my bags with a different fabric to the outside of the bag so it added some interest. I never got round to making myself a bag though….I sewed each bag with lots of love and then gave them away as presents to family and friends. I made a lot of the bags using Alexander Henry fabric that I ordered from the USA. There was a skeleton print one, a horse print version and even a cat themed bag. I will try and find some photos for you all and upload them to our Facebook page so you can see how they looked.

Now that I’ve had all this handbag inspiration from viewing all 80 odd of these sewing patterns I really must now add ‘Sew Myself a Handbag’ to my ‘Projects To Sew’ list.

If you do decide to buy a handbag sewing pattern from us we’d love it if you would send us a photo of the finished item. Please send the photo to sales@sewing-online.com and then we can upload it to our Facebook page for all of our fans to see. It would be lovely to see photos of the sewing projects you are all working on.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes, Kim
